Barber poles were coloured red, white and blue because in 1982, a man had a Christmas present for someone but needed a haircut, so he went to a barber shop. While he was getting a haircut, it snowed and the present was covered in snow. The man couldn't find the present and when the snow melted, the barbers said that anyone who came for a haircut would get their name put in a hat and have a chance of getting the present. So many people came to get a haircut that after this, it became a tradition and then barbers just started hanging fake presents outside their shops to attract people. There you have it: the barber shop.
Barbers were trying to attract lighthouse keepers to their barbershops. This was difficult to do because the lighthouse keepers were introverts and homebodies from spending their lives alone in lighthouses. The red and white stripes matched the colors on the lighthouse, making the lighthouse keepers feel at home in the barbershops.
A barber realized that all the kids coming to his barbershop were scared of the scissors and razors so he wanted something to make them calm. He wanted to give out candy canes to kids visiting. But his partner was a cheapskate and so he only put one big one at the front of the shop. So now everyone comes in wanting candy.
